Sweden Democrats want Östhammar to stop taking refugees from 2027, citing a new settlement law

SwedenNorthern EuropeOn the globe

The Sweden Democrats in Östhammar, Uppsala County, have proposed that the municipality stop receiving refugees from 2027, except people from nearby regions such as Ukrainians. Group leader Måns Lorichs cites a new settlement law that takes effect on 1 January 2027. The law lets municipalities state how many newly arrived people they wish to receive, but keeps their duty to accept those assigned to them. The party wants the same line across the county. The local Centre Party called the proposal "pathetic".

The law is a hybrid. Municipalities gain a formal channel to state their preferred intake, while the state keeps the power to assign. The Östhammar proposal tests how far a stated preference of zero can go, and whether coordinated refusals across a county shift placements onto other municipalities. Countries that disperse refugees by quota can watch how Sweden weighs such requests from 2027.
