Argentina: Milei pushes rapid-fire electoral and property-rights reforms

ArgentinaSouth AmericaOn the globe

President Javier Milei is negotiating with allied parties UCR and PRO on a package of electoral reforms, including a 'ley de lemas' list-linking system for legislative seats, scrapping mandatory primaries (PASO), and introducing a 'Ficha Limpia' clean-record requirement for candidates. Separately, his government is advancing a 'Law on the Inviolability of Private Property' aimed at deregulating rural land ownership and strengthening legal certainty for landowners.

The presidency has signalled it intends to roll out roughly ten reform bills per month across every ministry through the end of 2026. The pace has made Argentina a closely watched test case for how much institutional change a government can push through quickly — and how much scrutiny gets sacrificed along the way.
