Argentina: Milei to open coastal shipping to foreign vessels

ArgentinaSouth AmericaOn the globe

At the La Rural agricultural show, Milei announced reform of the Cabotage Law: foreign-flagged vessels could carry cargo and passengers between Argentine ports via temporary authorisations, crew-nationality rules would relax, and import tariffs would end on newer vessels — alongside further agricultural, capital-markets and pharmaceuticals deregulation.

Cabotage protectionism is the same argument as the US Jones Act, and post-Brexit Britain retains its own coastal shipping and maritime-crew rules — a test case for whether opening protected transport sectors actually lowers costs.
