Argentina: Milei moves to "lock in" his model — single-mandate central bank, fiscal "shutdown" rule

This story was updated in the Aug 6, 2026 edition: Milei's "10 bills a month" reform blitz: central bank reform and a "fiscal shackle"
Milei's next reform package rewrites the central bank charter: a single mandate (preserving the currency's value), a ban on monetary financing of the deficit, and a US-style "shutdown" mechanism forcing the executive to restrict state operations when budget lines are exhausted. Sturzenegger is separately pushing maritime/river transport and insurance deregulation.
The question of constitutionally "locking in" fiscal discipline against future governments is live for UK fiscal-rules debates — a test case for whether reform can outlast the reformer.
