Gijón's mayor vows to resist any extension of Asturias's rent-control zones in the city
SpainSouthern EuropeOn the globe
Asturias has begun applying its first "stressed residential market" zones, a rent-control tool in Spain's national Housing Law, including in parts of Gijón. In early August, regional planning and housing minister Ovidio Zapico said a second phase would study more areas, including the rest of Gijón. Mayor Carmen Moriyón called this "an intrusion from an office in Oviedo" and said the council would use every means available to resist.
The city objects that the region is deciding unilaterally and says a citywide intervention would have negative effects. For any multi-level system, the case tests which elected tier should decide where rent rules apply. The reach of the second phase is the open question.
